The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC opens its season with Grammy Award-winning Mexican superstar Aida Cuevas joined by her illustrious band Mariachi Juvenil Tecalitlán on September 22, 2018, at 8pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. Hailed as the “Queen of Mariachi,” Cuevas will sing classics by the late singer-songwriter and former mentor Juan Gabriel such as “Te Lo Pido Por Favor” and “La Diferencia.” She “is to Mexico what Aretha Franklin is to the United States: a powerful voice that encapsulates the essence of her nation’s spirit” (The Kansas City Star), and has become legendary in the typically male-dominated mariachi genre. Her unique voice and style have impacted the history of Mexican music, with her 39 albums selling more than eight million copies worldwide.Venue
