The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia presents the infectious Cuban rhythms of Orquesta Akokán on November 16, 2019, at 8pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. “Uplifting and upbeat” (Uncut), Orquesta Akokán is straight-from-the-heart 21st century mambo that channels the fiery 1940s and 50s heyday of Tito Puente, Benny Moré, and Pérez Prado’s old Havana. As punchy horns, driving rhythms, and the impassioned vocals of José "Pepito" Gómez mix to “punctuate an overarching vibe of joy” (Exclaim), the golden days are here again!
