Event Description

How many early 20th century Canadian women artists can you name other than Emily Carr? This lecture will enlighten you on the rich history of Canadian women artists that has generally been unaccounted for in art history textbooks. Jessica Ziakin will discuss a recent exhibition curated by Sarah Milroy in 2021 called Uninvited: Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Movement. Consisting of 200 works made by 31 Canadian and Indigenous women artists active from 1920 to 1945, the exhibit offers an abundance of alternative and excluded voices and visions. This lecture will consider how this exhibition invites new ways of thinking about Canadian women artists in terms of artistic value, cultural heritage, and visual style.

This program is part of an initiative called “Women, Art and Community” made possible in part with a Community Grant from the Victoria Foundation
