Victoria Folk Music Society weekly gathering: Everyone—welcome Jam at 6:45pm, Open Stage at 7:30pm, Feature Performers Banquo Folk Ensemble at 9:00pm; Norway House, 1110 Hillside Avenue, $8 cash at the doorBanquo Folk Ensemble, a quintet of singers and multi-instrumentalists who share a passion for both Early and Folk music plus a willingness to meddle with tradition, has been performing in and around Victoria, BC and the Gulf Islands since 1998. Their music is drawn from written and oral traditions covering more than eight centuries, including the occasional original composition by a bandmember! Inspired by the Celtic folk tradition, the historically informed performance movement, and their own imaginations, the ensemble performs with voice and a collection of instruments that includes recorders, hurdy gurdies, citterns, violin, bagpipes, harp, surpeti, a battery of percussion instruments and more.
Through the development of their own arrangements and interpretations of existing materials, Banquo Folk Ensemble bridges the gap between "art" music and the folk tradition, while always bearing in mind the goal of minstrels throughout the centuries — to please and entertain their audiences!
